When the Problem Isn't You: Recognizing Workplace Bullying

When the Problem Isn't You: Recognizing Workplace Bullying

By Dr. Talisha Brown

If you've ever left work replaying a conversation, wondering what you did wrong when you actually did nothing wrong, that's worth paying attention to. Workplace bullying is real, and it's a lot more common than people talk about.

It Doesn't Always Look Like Yelling

When people picture workplace bullying, they picture something loud and obvious. Most of the time it's quieter than that. It's being left out of conversations that affect your work. It's having your ideas dismissed until someone else says the same thing. It's a pattern of comments that always land as a dig, dressed up as a joke.

The quiet version is harder to name, which is exactly what makes it wear you down slower and longer.

You're Allowed to Trust What You're Noticing

One of the hardest parts is the self-doubt that creeps in. Am I overreacting? Is this normal? Am I being too sensitive?

If you keep leaving certain interactions feeling smaller than you did before them, that's information. You don't need a dramatic incident to take what you're feeling seriously.

What You Can Do From Where You Are

  • Start writing things down: dates, what was said, who was there
  • Talk to someone you trust outside the situation, so you're not carrying it alone
  • Notice the pattern, not just one bad day
  • Protect your energy where you can; you don't owe anyone access to your peace
  • Loop in HR or a workplace resource when you're ready, with your documentation in hand

This isn't legal advice, and every workplace and situation is different. But you don't have to figure out whether it's "bad enough" to say something. If it's affecting you, it's worth addressing.

You Get to Protect Your Peace

You're not too sensitive. You're not making it up. And you're allowed to take steps to protect yourself, even if nobody else in the room seems to notice what's happening.
