What Is Academic Coaching for Adult Learners? (And How It's Different From Tutoring)

By Dr. Talisha Brown, Founder of AcceleratEd

If you've gone back to school as an adult, you've probably heard the word "tutoring" a lot. But tutoring isn't really what most adult learners need. Academic coaching is different and it might be the missing piece if you've felt stuck, behind, or unsure how to keep going.

Tutoring vs. Coaching

Tutoring is about a subject. It's someone helping you understand a concept math, writing, science one topic at a time.

Academic coaching is about you and your whole path. It's not about one assignment. It's about how you plan your time, how you stay accountable, what gets in your way, and how you keep moving forward when life doesn't slow down for your degree.

Most adult learners don't struggle because they can't understand the material. They struggle because they're doing school on top of a job, a family, and a full life. That's not a tutoring problem. That's a coaching problem.

What an Academic Coach Actually Helps With

  • Building a realistic plan that fits your actual life, not an ideal one
  • Staying accountable when motivation runs low
  • Getting back on track after you fall behind
  • Breaking big goals into steps you can actually finish
  • Working through the stuff that's not in the syllabus, confidence, overwhelm, competing priorities

This matters even more if you're in a competency-based education (CBE) program, where you move at your own pace instead of following a fixed class schedule. That freedom is great, but it also means there's no built-in structure keeping you moving. A coach becomes that structure.

Why This Matters for CBE Student Success

In a traditional program, deadlines and class times keep you on track whether you like it or not. In a CBE program, you set the pace, which means it's easy to lose momentum without anyone noticing until you're way behind. Academic coaching for adult learners in CBE programs isn't a nice extra. For a lot of students, it's the difference between finishing and stalling out.

You're Not Behind. You Just Need a Plan.

If you've been putting off your degree, or you started and got stuck, that doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It usually means you never had a real plan built around your actual life - job, family, and all.

That's exactly what academic coaching is for.
