Wellness Isn't One More Thing On Your To Do List

Wellness Isn't One More Thing On Your To Do List

By Dr. Talisha Brown, Founder of AcceleratEd

If your idea of "wellness" is a perfect morning routine with green juice and a 5am workout, it's easy to feel like you're failing before you even start. That's not what wellness actually has to look like, especially if you're juggling work, family, school, or all three.

Wellness Doesn't Have to Be a Whole Routine

Wellness is really just the small, repeatable things that keep you functioning as a whole person,  not just checking boxes on a schedule. It includes your body, but it also includes your mind, your energy, and whether you're giving yourself any room to breathe.

You don't need an hour a day for it to count. Some of the most useful wellness habits take five minutes or less.

What Wellness Can Actually Look Like in a Busy Life

  • Drinking water before your first cup of coffee
  • Stepping outside for a few minutes, even just to sit in the car before you head in
  • Going to bed 20 minutes earlier instead of scrolling
  • Saying no to one thing this week that you would normally say yes to out of guilt
  • Moving your body in a way that feels good, not punishing — a walk counts

None of these require a gym membership or a total life overhaul. They just require you to notice that you matter too.

Why Wellness Matters If You're an Adult Learner or a Busy Parent

If you're working toward a degree, a goal, or just trying to keep everything running, your wellness is what determines whether you can keep going. It's not a reward for finishing everything else on your list,  it's what makes it possible to finish the list in the first place.

Burnout doesn't usually show up all at once. It shows up as being short-tempered, exhausted, and going through the motions. Small wellness habits are what catch that early, before it turns into something bigger.

Start With One Thing

You don't need to overhaul your whole life this week. Pick one small habit from the list above, or one of your own, and do it for the next few days. Wellness builds the same way anything else does; one small, repeated choice at a time.
